PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Position is responsible for the efficient management of assigned projects, plants, or operations. Position has the direct responsibility for assigned foreman, crews, equipment, plants, trucks, scheduling, safety, quality, workmanship, and completion of assigned projects on time and within estimated budget. This position may include duties within, but not be limited to:  Asphalt, Trucking, Equipment, Plants, Shop, Grade, Bridges, Concrete, Utilities, and Electrical.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Assistant Superintendent

  1. Supervise and direct foremen, crews, plants, and projects to assure completion of assigned projects as instructed by the applicable manager. Includes human resource and employee related matters.
  2. See that new personnel receive proper orientation to acquaint them with company policies, safety requirements, and job responsibilities.
  3. Conduct periodic evaluation of assigned personnel with special emphasis on their contribution to the company and our contribution to them.
  4. Assist and direct crews in proper use of equipment, improving job performance, controlling cost and quality of work, increasing productivity, improving safety, communication and housekeeping on project or site.
  5. Perform routine job site, equipment safety, and hazard identification inspections, and ensure maintenance and repairs are completed as needed.
  6. Ensure that materials are being ordered and delivered as needed for the project or operation of the plant.
  7. Monitor assigned personnel and maintain regular work hours. Maintain daily payroll records and log hours worked for each employee assigned to you.
  8. Ensure that foremen are maintaining daily diaries, recording conversations, weather conditions and events which could be used for future reference.
  9. Require that all daily reports are completed, verifying their accuracy and transmit promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
  10. Ensure all work is performed with an emphasis on safety and complies with OSHA, MSHA, local laws, ordinances and EPA regulations. This includes all subcontractors working on our project. Conduct daily huddle meetings with safety as the primary agenda.
  11. Maintain good relations with the general public, engineers, architects, inspectors and customers to facilitate job progress and to promote a positive company image. Develop a courteous and considerate attitude toward these groups.
  12. Work long, flexible hours as demanded by our customers including nights, weekends, and work outside for extended periods during all seasons of the year.
  13. Perform necessary work while complying with all company policies and procedures.
  14. Perform additional duties as required in the operations of the project or plant, or as directed by the superintendent.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years old.

 

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in managing heavy highway projects.
  • Must have experience managing multiple crews and operations.
  • Experience with NCDOT and/or Federal projects a plus.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and clean MVR.
  • Experience in grading and paving for sitework, subdivisions, highway work, traffic and erosion control.
  • Applicant must pass background check. This includes any background checks for military bases, airport operations and secured industrial sites.
  • Must have a good work ethic, be dependable, on-time and have regular and constant attendance.
  • Job requires various hours that may include nights and weekends.

 

Other:

  • Level II EC Certification
  • NCDOT Traffic Control Supervisor Certification is a plus

 

Heavy Physical Demands:

Heavy physical effort required including pulling and lifting or moving light weight material with occasional lifting or moving materials or equipment (over 80 pounds). If a position specific Physical Demands sheet is attached, it will describe in more detail the physical demands that are required. 

 

Physical Activity:

Position requires the ability to continuously work around noise, dust, heat, cold, oil, and heavy equipment. Personal protective equipment may be required. Position requires ability to exchange ideas quickly and clearly and the ability to receive and evaluate detailed information and instructions.
